I don't know. [He thinks there probably were - he'd say 'I told you so' but even he's not that inhuman. He just hopes most of the kids got out of there after he kept telling them to find other places to sleep.]
I'm gonna check on the campsite, make sure it's all good, then I'll head on over. You stay away from the apartment block, okay? It ain't safe.
I s'pose so. [Just be careful, he wants to say, over and over again, even though he knows she's aware. He'd keep her away from everyone he didn't vet himself, if he could.]
[She does know-- the world wasn't perfect and safe even before the outbreak. But she understands that there are a lot of reasons for him to worry. So she hears his 'be careful' even if he doesn't say it.]
Guess we'll have to start scouting for supplies tomorrow.
[Sarah doesn't think she can do much today. The children have upset her more than she can say.]
Yeah. [That's a good segue, good job Sarah. Joel can much more easily talk about practical considerations.] The stash should hold out for a bit, but I figure we might have a few more mouths to feed soon. We'll probably go in shifts, to keep the camp secure, and scavenge in pairs.
[Joel can hear the faint rustle of fabric as Sarah shifts uncomfortably. She knows she can't protect herself, not in a fight. She took care of herself back home, but it wasn't a life-or-death struggle every day. Sarah tries not to think of home, but she thinks of it more and more each day.
After a long pause, she replies.]
More people means more helping hands. The faster we can prepare, the better, right?
voice;
[His voice has that hint of breathlessness that indicates he is moving, and moving quickly.]
What about you? Everything okay at the campsite? I'm comin' over there now.
voice;
[Pause.] Wonder if they're 'satisfied' now.
voice;
[By that he means - the waves and waves of it that were coming from the school, anyway.]
I told 'em to clear out of the apartment building.
[He wonders how many are dead.]
voice;
[She tries not to think of people potentially being trapped in that building. It makes her stomach twist.]
voice;
Yeah.
voice;
D'you know if there were people in the building when it came down?
voice;
I'm gonna check on the campsite, make sure it's all good, then I'll head on over. You stay away from the apartment block, okay? It ain't safe.
voice;
I guess we'll be fixing up a lot of buildings.
[Yes, 'we.' A lot of people helped her out and she's determined to help them out now.]
voice;
[He's okay with that, really. If she can help in a way that won't put her in direct danger, he'll let her.]
There's some folks with super strength around here - like comic book superheroes. Might not be so bad.
voice;
[Not that a supervillain rampage could make this place much worse, but...]
voice;
voice;
Guess we'll have to start scouting for supplies tomorrow.

[She doesn't want a nice visit from the Yao who want to snatch her away in the name of science.]
