Pft, doubt it. You know how Bill is about his stuff.

[ Almost curiously, he traces her lips with a finger. ]

Not that I blame him.

[She takes his hand in hers to still it, just to kiss his fingertips.]

Mm. [ He sighs, and relaxes a little more into the couch, against her warmth. ]

He protects what’s his.

[ Which is why, despite the fact that he doesn’t especially like Bill, he understands and respects him. ]

It's what good men do.

[And he is a good man, despite his... eccentricities. Even then, there's not many people she can say that about anymore.]

[ Joel just makes another vague sound in the back of his throat. Not agreeing with her, not arguing with her, either. “Good” and “bad” don’t really figure into his calculus anymore. Survival isn’t about good or bad. It’s about what needs to be done.

Still, what he has with Tess - it’s good. It feels good, as good as anything can feel anymore. So there’s that. ]
