Character Name: Joel Miller
Character Canon: The Last of Us
Canon Point: end of The Last of Us Part 1
Age: 50s

Crime: Betrayal and kidnapping of a loved one. (If you want some explanation of this or it's not an adequate crime, just let me know and I'll be happy to explain or pick something else!)

Background: A wiki.

Personality: The first thing to know about Joel is that he is a hardened, traumatized survivor of a global zombie apocalypse. The death of his daughter during the outbreak had a profound effect on him, closing him off emotionally from most of the world and shifting his focus to survival, and survival only.

The second thing to know about Joel is that he is a protector. The few people he does allow in past his defenses - his brother Tommy, his partner Tess, and eventually Ellie - are people to whom he is loyal, occasionally to a fault (for instance, Tommy is so put off by some of what Joel has done in the name of keeping them both alive that it causes a rift between them). He'll do anything to protect the people he cares about, and when he loses them (ex. Tess), he blames himself for it, considers it a personal failure. In his mind, he has one job, one raison d'etre, and God help any motherfucker who gets in his way.

Joel is not a leader by nature. For instance, it's clear that in his partnership with Tess, she is the brains and he is the brawn of the operation - she has the charm, charisma and ability to make plans that he lacks (he even calls her things like "ma'am" and "boss"). This is not to say that Joel is incapable, simply that he is much more of a reactionary, and an opportunist, rather than someone who makes elaborate plans.

He is also a doomer, even by post-apocalyptic standards. Again, contrast him with characters like Tess and Ellie, who express hope, even excitement and happiness on occasion, while Joel is much more likely to remain taciturn and concerned about potential threats even when others are more likely to let down their guard.

Needless to say, then, that Joel is not especially idealistic. He does not believe in a cause, or a greater good. When he takes Ellie across the country, it is not because he actually thinks that she might be the key to a cure. It's because he promised Tess before she died, and later, it's because he comes to love Ellie like a daughter. This is why, when it comes down to possibly sacrificing Ellie's life for the possibility to save humanity, Joel refuses to allow it to happen. Humanity isn't his problem. Ellie is the one he cares about, and he isn't going to lose her, too. At the canon point at which I'm bringing him, his one goal is to settle in Jackson, the community his brother helps to lead, with Ellie. He's extended his circle of protection to this small community of people for Ellie's sake, and Tommy's, but he has not confronted the magnitude of what he did to keep Ellie alive, the lives he destroyed to save her, or the betrayal he committed against her to do it. That'll be key to finding some kind of redemption in Expiation, if he even can.

Abilities: Joel is a baseline human, albeit one who has lived through a zombie apocalypse and therefore has a lot of survival skills - he's good in a fight, a decent shot with a gun, is used to scavenging and rationing and living rough. He's extremely inured to violence and has no hesitation in harming or killing people he sees as a threat to his safety and that of people he cares for. He also used to be a carpenter/worked in construction so he knows a lot about structures and is generally handy.

Inventory: Joel has an old backpack that he carries supplies in. He's got some basic necessities, like a change of clothes, some nonperishable food, and a flashlight. He's also got a gas mask, a revolver with some spare bullets (like, maybe ten), and a homemade nail bomb.

Samples: Here's some TDM threads, and here's a recent bakerstreet thread.

Questions: I can't think of anything!
